The NAACP Called For a Charter School Moratorium to stop charter school expansion until which time the concerns expressed in their report are addressed.
Given the facts they presented about charter schools, their request is a reasoned and reasonable request. Don’t you think?
Major Points of Concern
- Charters have mixed performance.
- Charters frequently close, sometimes leaving students in the lurch.
- Charters suspend black students at higher rates and have been accused of pushing out certain students.
- Charter schools have been accused of lacking financial transparency and accountability.
- Charters schools may increase segregation.
- For-profit and virtual charter schools are especially troubling in light of low performance.
“The vote taken by the NAACP is a declaratory statement by this Association that the proliferation of charter schools should be halted as we address the concerns raised in our resolution,” said Chairman Brock.
The NAACP made a declaration, we must make a demand. This respectful request to STOP charter school expansion must be honored, by us — as a nation.
OUR federal government must stop charter school expansion through OUR federal education laws, using OUR federal tax dollars.
Halt the further expansion of federally funded charter schools through the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). This means:
We must call for an immediate injunction on the implementation of ESSA. Demand our federal education dollars NOT be used for any new spending but rather that a continuing resolution continue the funding level that holds schools harmless.
Congress must halt the funding process of ESSA, assure that none of the appropriations of money are earmarked for charter expansion, and convene an independent review of ESSA outside the authority of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pension Committee members and the House Education and Workforce Development Committee members.
As the NAACP stated in their press release…
We are calling for a moratorium on the expansion of the charter schools at least until such time as:
Charter schools are subject to the same transparency and accountability standards as public schools,
Public funds are not diverted to charter schools at the expense of the public school system,
Charter schools cease expelling students that public schools have a duty to educate, and
Charter schools cease to perpetuate de facto segregation of the highest performing children from those whose aspirations may be high but whose talents are not yet as obvious.
P.S. This might help explain the issues to your representative’s staff.
REQUEST: A Continuing Resolution to fund the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to hold existing schools financially harmless but NO NEW FED ED FUNDING for the new programs in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
REQUEST: An immediate injunction to stop implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) to honor the NAACP call for a moratorium on charter school expansion.
REQUEST: Start the repeal process for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
